Dental Implant Surgery

To ensure a swift recovery after an implant placement, and to help you avoid complications with the healing of your surgical site, we have provided the following information:

Bleeding

Bleeding is a regular aspect after implant surgery, which can be controlled by biting down on a gauze pad, placed directly on the surgical site. Call our office is bleeding is excessive.

Rinsing

Avoid rinsing, spitting, or touching the wound for the first day following your procedure.

Pain Medication

Use all prescribed medications as directed, and avoid alcohol with any medication. You may also use mild over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol, Advil, or Ibuprofen, to relieve discomfort.  It is most effective to switch between two different pain medication brands.

Oral Hygiene

We want our patients to understand that proper oral hygiene is necessary for optimal healing. You may begin brushing your teeth the day after your procedure, but do your best be gentle with the surgical areas.

Wearing your Prosthesis

Do not wear your denture or partial dentures until our oral surgeon gives you permission to do so.

Diet

We recommend you drink plenty of fluids and avoid hot liquids or foods. You can maintain a soft diet until you feel comfortable resuming your regular diet.

Swelling

Swelling is normal following your procedure.  Apply an ice bag to the side to your cheek for 15-minute intervals for the first 36 hours.

Smoking

Do not smoke or use tobacco products.  Use of tobacco products can cause your implants to fail.

Driving/ Physical Activity

Do not drive or operate machinery for 12 hours following your procedure.
